HMRC announced on June 8 that the self-assessment helpline will be temporarily unavailable from 12 June 2023 to 4 September 2023. During that period, self-assessment queries will be redirected to the department’s digital services, including its online guidance, digital assistant and webchat.
The line will still be open if you need to discuss bereavement. The closure of this line may impact your employees if they are required to file a UK tax return.
Other forms of communication will still be available, such as Ask HMRC Online and any other guidance available on the HMRC website.
This is a seasonal trial period that stems from the fact that HMRC receives fewer self-assessment calls during the summer, 50% lower than during the busy period between January and April. By closing the self-assessment helpline, HMRC expect to free up 350 advisors during the trial period to assist on other helplines and urgent queries, with an estimated extra 6,600 calls answered each day.
